What is #FreeBritney campaign?

According to the New York Times, the term #FreeBritney can be traced back to 2009 and comes from a fan site that disagrees with the regulatory agreement.

After Spears suddenly canceled his residency in Las Vegas in 2019 and moved into a mental health center for emotional distress caused by his father's illness, the movement received attention again.

Some fans of Spears believed that she was forced to stay under the agreement and even asked the White House to terminate her supervisory and submitted a petition with tens of thousands of signatures. Activists of the #FreeBritney movement often hold hearings outside of court. Many celebrities also expressed support for the event, including Paris Hilton, Betty Midler, and Miley Cyrus.
